Today's topic: Beds and amniotic fluid. Friends or foes?
Several weeks ago I placed two thick towels under my side of the bed.
Just in case...
However, after consulting with my friend Jen who said, "I can not stress enough how much fluid comes out of there..."
And my midwife, who said, "You're going to need a mop and bucket when this one goes..."
We started to reconsider our mattress saving tactics.
I mean, we've already replaced it once this year when our precious little Mabel decided to use our boudoir of love as her own personal pee pee palace.
Enter the duct tape, safety pins and garbage bags!
The Hubs and I had quite a bit of fun with this little set up.
First, we split open the bag and reinforced the edges with tape. Then, we skillfully pined the tightly pulled edges to the mattress. This, of course, was followed by a generous helping of duct tape.
On top of our black Hefty bag we placed, the thickest, nastiest, washable, fleece blanket we own. We secured this with more pins and more tape and proudly concealed the lot beneath our innocent looking bed linens.
The result?
Sweating. A whole crap load of sweating.
Surprisingly though, much less crinkling than I anticipated.
And, a lot less bunchy than the towels...
They say that 15% of women have their waters break before labour begins. If I am one of them...I think our mattress has at least a small chance of survival.

Excellent job! My water broke in Borders (the book store). It was just a trickle then. We went home, called the doc, packed a bag and the whole time it was just trickling. DH put a lot of towels under me before I got into the car "just in case". Thank goodness. By the time we got to the hospital 10 minutes later, I was soaked. They sent me right to labor and delivery, because they KNEW my water broke. No triage for me!
Lots of luck!
You are too cute. I love all the strategizing. Good luck to you!
ha ha. as part of our homebirth kit(s) we had a tarp that went over the whole bed. made things a bit noisy at night, but I knew I wouldn't wreck our (expensive) mattress when my water broke.
Of course, since I was thus prepared (both times), my water did not break - both times! With #1, my midwife broke it as Bee was crowning, and well, you know the story with #2.
However, I wish you oodles of fluids!
Um, you do realize that they make waterproof mattress pads that will cover the entire mattress... They're like $20 at Wal-Mart and will no doubt save your husband's side of the mattress as well.
:)
Good thinking!
I guess maybe I am disillusioned in my thinking of my waters breaking with a whoosh- I've always thought it was more likely to be more of a steady trickle that you could manage.
Something to think about! And alot of women do go into labor in the middle of the night. Nice handy work. :)
So exciting! You're so close!!!
Good idea! We bought a waterproof mattress pad as part of redoing our bedroom.
My water broke before labor (I never had contractions until many hours later when I was finally induced) but luckily mine broke over the toilet on one of the many trips to the loo.
You'll be amazed at how much water there is and how it just KEEPS COMING. I sat on towels for the several hours before I went to the hospital (doctor said I could stay home until 9 pm).
Lots of luck to you!
My water broke while I was walking across a parking lot - trickle trickle trickle for the whole car ride home, for which I sat on a big ass maxi pad I'd been packing for weeks just in case. Once home the flow increased, but it was never too much for a pad - I just went through several within a few hours. The most amazing thing to me was how warm the waters were - duh of course it was warm, but somehow it totally surprised me!
Good for you...I'm ignoring the fact that i might soak the mattress as I rapidly approach 40 wks. I tried sleeping with one of the crib sized puddle pads we bought for the baby, but it didn't stay put and I didn't think of duct tape. good luck with your delivery when the big day finally comes!
Very resourceful. I am impressed!
So excited for you!
2 weeks, 2 weeks, 2 weeks and you'll have a little wee one!!!
We did the same thing only we used a shower curtain under the sheet which covered the whole bed. Lily was born in January, so not too warm out, but sleeping with that shower curtain under us made me sweat so bad I had to open the window wide in the night and Devinder ended up sleeping in his 30 below sleeping bag while I boiled to death!!
Then my waters broke during labour, in the bath just before the pushing stage. With Nadia the midwife had to break them. You just never know...
